We Are Looking For

Self-published or unpublished manuscripts that are professional, complete and polished. Maximum length allowed 100,000 words.

The Goals of ONEBOOKAZ Are

  • To celebrate literature
  • To foster a sense of community
  • To support Arizonans as content creators
  • To enhance digital literacy skills

The ONEBOOKAZ writing competition is open to authors residing in Arizona as of the October 14, 2014 entry deadline. Employees of the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records are not eligible to participate. By participating in this competition, entrants agree to be bound by these official rules and by the decisions of the Arizona State Library, whose decisions are final in all matters relating to this competition. Author’s submission of their work and entry form is the entrant’s guarantee that they are the sole author and copyright holder of the content. Please submit only one entry per person.

Contest Categories

ONEBOOKAZ for Kids: Illustrated picture book or beginning chapter book that would appeal to children between the ages of 3-12.

ONEBOOKAZ for Teens: Literature that would appeal to the age group including 12 -18 years of age.

ONEBOOKAZ for Adults: Literature that would appeal to a general adult readership of 18 and older.

How To Enter

Review the SELF-e terms of agreement, complete all required general information fields, provide requested book metadata and upload your submission. All entries are to be submitted electronically at Accepted file types: epub2, epub3 and PDF.

All entries must be appropriate for posting on Arizona State Library’s website. Obscene, inappropriate or otherwise questionable content will not be considered. The Arizona State Library retains sole discretion as to what constitutes inappropriate content.


A panel of judges will review all eligible submissions based on quality, creativity, originality, style, and grammar. In addition the Digital Arizona Library (DAZL) EBook’s collection policy will be used as part of the judging criteria as needed. The designated ONEBOOKAZ authors will be determined by the judges with the final decision by the Arizona State Library. All decisions will be final.

Items generally not considered for selection include but are not limited to:

  • Self-help books
  • Promotional materials for specific individuals or groups, e.g. religion, ideologies, businesses, services.
  • Pornographic or offensive materials
  • School textbooks
  • Illegal or infringing content
  • Collections of short fiction or other short works
Reading Arizona Ebook Platform

Selected authors from all submitted entries may be requested to provide the Arizona State Library with a copy of their work to be included in the Emerging Arizona Authors collection on the Reading Arizona platform and made available online. The Arizona State Library will negotiate with the authors to determine permissions and digital rights management.


One selected author from each category will be designated a ONEBOOKAZ author and his or her submission will be selected in the Arizona statewide ONEBOOKAZ program, sponsored by the Arizona Center for the Book. The author’s work will be made available to all Arizonans as a digital download, free and without compensation for the duration of the program.

Contributing collaborators such as illustrators or compilers will need to assign the copyrights to the submitting author. The assignment and work for hire must be in a written contract signed and dated before submitting manuscript to and is the sole responsibility of the submitting author.

The ONEBOOKAZ selected author from each category will need to be available to assist in the promotion of their ONEBOOKAZ title through scheduled author visits and/or by participating in other relevant library sponsored events. An honorarium will be paid as compensation for participation in said visits and events. This will be negotiated directly with the selected authors.


The designated ONEBOOKAZ author from each category will be required to sign all necessary legal documents provided by the Arizona State Library agreeing to the terms set forth. Arrangements for the fulfillment of being a designated ONEBOOKAZ author as set forth include appearances and promotion of the ONEBOOKAZ program, which will be made by the Arizona State Library. All honorariums are non-transferable. Upon receipt of any part of the honorarium, the designated ONEBOOKAZ authors are required to comply with any and all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. All expenses, including taxes, on the receipt and use of the honorarium are the sole responsibility of the selected authors. All entrants agree that their entry may be used by the Arizona State Library in whole or in part for any relevant purpose without compensation to non-selected entrants or without additional compensation to the selected ONEBOOKAZ selected author. The Arizona State Library agrees to not profit from or release non-selected entrants’ contents to others besides those necessary to complete the competition (i.e. judges, staff of the Arizona State Library) and furthermore the Arizona State Library will relinquish all rights to all content not selected in the 2015 ONEBOOKAZ competition after June 1, 2015, unless the author has granted specific permission to use the content.

Legal Necessities

Authors hereby agree to submit their entries under the following terms and conditions: (i) that the Arizona State Library may use any ideas, concepts, material, in whole or in part, contained in an entry; (ii) that all materials submitted become the property of the Arizona State Library for the period October 1, 2014 through June 1, 2015; unless otherwise negotiated (iii) that all materials submitted are free from any lien or claim by anyone; (iv) entrants have obtained all rights, permissions and licenses necessary to use the entries for any purpose; (v) that no entry or any part thereof infringes any trademark or copyright or otherwise violates anyone’s right of privacy or publicity; and (vi) Entrants indemnify and hold harmless the State of Arizona or the Arizona State Library from any claims, suits, losses, damages and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) that arise from any breach of the conditions set forth in the official rules. They further agree, if chosen as a designated ONEBOOKAZ author, to assign all right, title and interest in all material and agree to sign such documentation as is necessary to formalize this assignment for the ONEBOOKAZ program for the time period of October 1, 2014 to June 1, 2015.


The Arizona State Library is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunctions that occur as a result of entering this competition. The Arizona State Library reserves the right in their sole and unequivocal discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, delay or suspend the competition.

All interpretations of the rules and decisions by the Arizona State Library are final. Entries that have been tampered with or altered are void. The Arizona State Library reserves the right, in their sole and unequivocal discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds or believes to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the website, or to be acting in violation of the official rules.
